Fun & Functional 6.0

Fun & Functional is an application created by author and Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) Rosie Simms with the aim of enhancing language comprehension and expression across various age groups. The capacity to recognize and articulate the function of real-world objects is a fundamental language and life skill. Fun & Functional serves as a valuable tool for SLPs, parents, and other individuals to refine categorization and descriptive abilities through engagement with images and audio.

Based on substantial research on vocabulary and word meaning development in students, Fun & Functional plays a pivotal role in improving vocabulary, descriptive skills, and word associations, thus aiding students in language comprehension and reading capabilities (Bromley, 2007). Notably, students often encounter challenges in acquiring verb-based vocabulary (Loeb, Pye, Redmond & Richardson, 1996), a skill that Fun & Functional specifically focuses on. The application enables users to concentrate on identifying and describing words within crucial categories like vehicles and household items, aligning with studies indicating that categorization enhances word retention and retrieval (Miller & Eilam, 2008). Moreover, the application is thoughtfully designed to offer visual support beneficial for students with autism spectrum disorder, addressing recommended objectives for this demographic such as expanding word knowledge and action verbs (ASHA, 2006). Furthermore, Fun & Functional caters to the educational objectives of children with language learning disorders who face challenges in vocabulary acquisition and descriptive language skills, which could potentially impact their reading and writing proficiency (Chanly, 1994; Gray, 2003, 2006; Stahl & Fairbanks, 1986).

• An automatically generated report at the end of each activity that can be emailed for parental review or record-keeping purposes
